Holiday Mix

I was feeling like a lazy decorator the other day... I wanted to start my holiday decorating but I only had a few minutes to put something together before the little one woke from her nap. I was looking for instant gratification, something quick and easy. This is what I came up with.

I pulled out a few things from my Christmas decor stash and sort of just piled it all together... the brown ornaments and cone trees are from Ikea two years ago, the white pinecones are Crate & Barrel, crystal bits from Pottery Barn, and the reindeer and penguins are from Loblaws/Superstore. The reed wreath is Ikea too. I was feeling a sort of natural organic look mixed with a bit of holiday glam so I stuck to a palette of browns and whites.

I used my 3-tier stand (also from Loblaws) and hobnail candlestick holders and cake stand to add some height and texture. I love all the different textures, shapes and finishes. Polished off the look with a white ribbon for the wreath and a latte coloured pearl strand. Easy peasy pretty.

Its a bit more relaxed and simple than how the sideboard looked in 2008:

And in 2009:

But then again, so am I these days ;)

Holiday Cards & Tiny Prints Giveaway

I really should have called this "Giveaway Week"... but more on that later.

*******

Have you started on your holiday greeting cards? Thanks to Tiny Prints, I've got this task off my To Do list. I really loved loved loved the cards I got from Tiny Prints last year so I was excited to buy from them once again. Not only does Tiny Prints have unique and memorable card designs, but the card stock they use feels great in your hands, and they ship to Canada! Awesome.

Using the Tiny Prints site is so easy too. I really like the "My Picks" feature which allows you to save designs you like as you browse. I like to browse though all the designs, pick out a few favourites, do some mock ups so I can see what the finished product will look like, and buy the one I like best. Tiny Prints makes that whole process fast and easy.

Most of the card elements are customizable; you can easily change the text, font, font size, colours, and layouts. Here's a few of the designs I considered using. I love the round ones you can hang as an ornament!

And here's the card from last year. Wow, what a difference a year makes, eh?

Aren't they fun? You'll have to wait see what I chose for this year's card...it wasn't any of the ones I featured above ;) (Note: I wasn't paid to write this. I really do love Tiny Prints' products!)

*****

Now onto the giveaway... Tiny Prints has kindly offered a $50 gift certificate to one of my readers to print their holiday cards this year! Flooring Flummox

And the basement planning continues. Last we left it, we were still tweaking the layout plan. Now we're stuck thinking about the floors. You see, HandyMan wants the basement to be warm and comfy, a place to escape to, maybe relax and watch a movie, and to him that means carpet underfoot. Normally, I'd agree with him... if I didn't also want the basement to be a place where Chloe and I can create and make crafts and do some sewing and draw and paint and throw glitter around, so to me that means laminate underfoot.

Which leaves us here:

We're at an impasse. We briefly considered doing a portion of the room in carpet and a portion in laminate, but the basement is not that big to begin with so different flooring would make it look too choppy and small. Part of the dilemma is the stairs leading to the basement. They are currently covered in vinyl and beneath that we know there is only construction grade plywood. There is no refinishing and painting those babies; they would either have to be completely covered in some material or refaced (and that seems an expensive option, but I admit we haven't really looked into the cost of refacing).

If we were to do it entirely in laminate (or vinyl flooring like the Traffic Allure product which I've heard great things about from my friends Arren and Lisa), what do we do on the stairs? We've read that laminate on stairs is super slippery (and how do you deal with the nosing?).

If we were to do it entirely in carpet, then lost sewing pins or paint spills would be a hazard. Decisions, decisions. Weigh in folks - carpet or laminate? What do you have in your basement??

One of a Kind Show Toronto

Such great comments on my last post everyone! I enjoyed reading every one of them and hearing about your views on blogging. Whether we blog for fun or for business or just for ourselves, I think we're all at least becoming more aware of the endless possibilities of blogging.

Speaking of possibilities, because of this blog I was invited to the media breakfast for the One of a Kind Show today, thanks to Susan Tyndall at O Live PR and Shannon at What's Up Whimsy! Let me tell you, that was the BEST breakfast I have had in a very long time. It was prepared by the students of the George Brown College Chef School and featured such delicious fare as Scottish Egg, Cornflake-coated French Toast, and Breakfast Tea Poached Pear. Yum!

So with a full tummy, I headed off to check out the show. If you've never been, the One of a Kind Show is a wonderland of hand-crafted goodness. It is definitely the place to go to find the perfect Christmas gift. I think the show gets better and better every year and this year was definitely the best yet. Here's some of the things that caught my eye:

There was sooooo much great stuff to buy at the show, can't you tell? I think I have to go back and get some of that cappuccino toffee and shortbread cookies I resisted buying. Good thing that the show offers a readmit pass - you pay once, and you can come back again anytime during the duration of the show (Nov 25-Dec 5)!

So what goodies did come home with me? As usual, I came home with things for the kiddo and nothing for me. I can't help it; stuff for her is way too cute to resist! She got adorable kimono pjs from Redfish Kids Clothing (don't tell her, she'll get them for Christmas!) and these sweet sweet things too...

Red Riding Hood cape from Patouche; Woodland bookends from Gosia Gosia

Chloe was over-the-moon happy to have a cape that matched her favorite pajamas :) Do make a trip to the show if you can. There's something there for everyone on your list!

I Mean Business

See this... isn't it pretty? This is my new business card. The ones I ordered in prep for the meetup. The ones I hoped would arrive last week. And the ones that still haven't appeared in my mailbox. Sigh.

But they were too pretty not to show you. Yes, those are handy rulers on the back printed in a rainbow of colours. I always find myself in a furniture store or Home Depot fishing around in my purse looking for something to measure with, don't you?

Its so strange to call myself a blogger, put it on a piece of paper and make it permanent. I've always thought of blogging as my hobby and while it is, it can be something more if you want it to be. The GKHair representative that spoke at our blogger party talked about how bloggers shouldn't be afraid to ask from things, how some corporations recognize the power and influence bloggers have and want to work with you, how "we" are a legitimate media resource. An interesting perspective, though I'm not entirely convinced many Canadian corporations share that view... yet. What's your take on being a blogger? Do you tell people you are a blogger, or is it something you share with only a select few?

Anyhow, I'm sure I'll love my new business cards - when I finally get them.

Big Girl Room: Picking Fabrics

When I design a room, the first thing I do is pick fabrics. Picking fabrics is one my most favourite things in the world. Ask HandyMan, he knows I can spend hours at Designer Fabrics browsing all the samples. I really think fabrics can make or break a room. They set the tone and feel of the space and often determine the colour palette. So when I'm trying to set a direction for a design, I look to my fabrics first.

To create a look for the big girl room, my first step was to order some samples from Tonic Living. They did such a fabulous job with my master bedroom curtains, I knew they would have some fun options to consider:

When I think of kids' rooms, I automatically think of polka dots and stripes so I ordered some samples of that. I really liked the large floral print at top and the cotton blossom print at the bottom too. Yet, although these samples were cute, nothing was really grabbing me yet.

So off I went to Designer Fabrics (which never ever disappoints) and I borrowed these lovely samples:

Delish! Now things were coming together. It took a really long time to whittle it down to these samples though... do you know how hard it is to pick a fabric when you have no clue what look you're going for?? At one point, I had about 20 samples piled on a table, everything from navy & white gingham and other preppy fabrics, to durable outdoor fabrics covered in a vibrant sea blue & orange koi pattern, to sweet delicate tiny florals. And they only let you borrow 8 samples at a time so it took me a very very long time to decide!

Doesn't the top left pastel floral fabric remind you of this pretty wallpaper in the Miette candy store?

Photos from Design*Sponge

I love love love this store and its one of my main inspirations for the big girl room. Its a little bit vintage, a little bit modern. So which fabrics did I end up choosing? You'll just have to wait and see!

Meetup Magic

Last night, I walked into a room full of friends that I hadn't yet met. That's how I felt when I went to the Canadian Design Bloggers Meetup. It was a room filled with 60 women, and even though I had only met 3 or 4 of them in person before, it didn't feel like a room full of strangers.

I loved finally meeting the lovely faces behind the blogs I visit on a daily basis. Like these ladies:

JAX does design; Bijou and Boheme, Decor Happy, The Marion House Book

And these ones too:

and many, many others. As one of the organizers, along with Daniella and Vitania, it was fulfilling to see it all come together. The venue, swanky Hotel Le Germain, was the perfect backdrop for mingling and trading fashion tips and renovation stories over hors d'oeuvres and drinks. From the inspiring speeches from our sponsors GKHair and Delta Faucet, to the envy-inducing giveaways from House & Home, One of a Kind Show, Penny People, Interior Design Show, Style At Home, Omiyage, and Kravet Canada, and the sweet floral arrangements by Coriander Girl, it was a magical night.

I must admit I felt like the "elder stateswoman" in some ways, having been at this blogging thing longer than most of the people in the room. And in my 3+ years of blogging, I've often wondered... what's it all for? Why put myself, my house, and my family out on display? Luckily, last night I found that answer.

To me, blogging is about community and making connections with people you otherwise would never have crossed paths with. It was wonderful to hear from some bloggers that listing them in my blog roll helped drive traffic to their sites - and in the same breath, these same bloggers gave me suggestions for my basement reno. Its a give and take thing, this blogging thing, isn't it?

Like I said to Celeste from GKHair (who does have the most fabulous hair, by the way!), most of the people who blog don't blog about their 'regular' day jobs; they blog about their passions, what drives them, what they would choose to do and pursue for the rest of their days if they could. We all have that "blogging story" inside each one of us, waiting to come out. And I was so lucky to see those stories come to life, in real form, in those 60 beautiful ladies last night.

I want to thank all of you who have come to visit at Rambling Renovators over the last few days or over the last few years. You make me feel supported and encouraged and inspired to do those things I love to do in life. I hope in some small way I do the same for you.

xoxo

Want, Need, Wear, Read

I come from a large family. A typical family gathering with my family, aunts, uncles, first cousins, spouses, and children numbers in the 50's. So you can imagine our Christmas chaos and it goes a little something like this:

Yes, that is a picture of the gift pile from last year. We have tried many things over the years to get that pile under control. Kris Kringle, only getting gifts for the grandchildren, limiting dollar values of the gifts... but somehow, that pile always hovers between a mound and a foothill. Everyone always wants to get gifts for the new grandkids, then ones for the godchildren too, and then for your siblings, and then and then and then...

This year, at least with my own family, I'm suggesting we try a simpler approach - the Want, Need, Wear, Read of gift giving. The idea is simple: give the person a gift in each of those categories. I like how this minimizes the extravagant spending, but it also forces you to think more about what the receiver would want and makes for more meaningful gifts. Here's the things on my own dream list:

Want: Mackinac Island vacation

Okay, this is a pretty extravagant "want" but this is something that has been on my list for years. I would love to go with my parents, my siblings and their families, and my family for a summertime vacation to Mackinac Island. Have you heard of it? Mackinac is an 8-mile long island in Michigan where cars are prohibited and you explore by foot, bike or horse-drawn shuttle. The island is full of beautiful Victorian homes, grand hotels, and an old fashioned main street that plays host to many summer festivals. Sounds idyllic!

Need: Zumi Digital Camera 2.0

I neeeeeed this video camera. I'm under the belief that with this magical video camera I will be more inclined to document my family's life and so my daughter will have more tangible memories of her childhood. Good enough reason, right? Okay, so maybe the real reason I need this camera is that it shoots in 8mm style video. It makes life look so stylish, retro, and fun - and who wouldn't want those kind of memories?

Wear: Jojo Totes Camera bag

I'm not a big clotheshorse so I'd rather have this to wear around than a new pair of boots. Doesn't even look like a camera bag, does it? The faux leather is so pretty with its ruffles and marigold colour. And the fact that it can store my Nikon D80 (with the lens on) and a few diapers and wipes makes it awesome in my books.

Read: The New Traditional by Darryl Carter

Sad to admit that I'm not a big reader (do blogs count??) but if you do find me perusing in a book store, it will most likely be in the Decor & Design section. I could spend hours flipping through magazines and hardcover books filled with pretty pictures of people's homes. One book I'd like to have on my shelf is this one by designer Darryl Carter. I'm drawn to his white interiors and warm woods. His rooms have a gallery-like quality, not overly decorated or accessorized, with breathing room to enjoy each piece in the space.

So tell me, what's one thing on your Christmas list this year?
