Antique Addition
This baby blue side table is:
A. A functional piece of furniture
B. A great place to rest a lamp, a book, or a hot cup of tea
C. The perfect ladder for a climbing toddler.
If you said "All of the above", you'd be correct. This is the side table we currently have in Chloe's room. When we are upstairs, we close the baby gate at the top of the stairs and leave Chloe free to explore the bedrooms and hallway. The side table unfortunately is not baby-proofed... it only took one time for me to find Chloe standing up on the second step, reaching for the bed, to realize that it needed to be replaced.
Luckily, after a day of apple picking, we decided to scoot over and catch the last two hours of the famous Christie Antique Fair. I'm so glad we did because we managed to find this little table and chair.
Its the perfect size; doesn't take up too much space and doesn't impede the door swing. I like the curvy top too and the ring-like details on the legs. I also love the colour of it... its been refinished in a nice medium tone stain (it looks a bit orange in some of these photos, but its more of a warm brown colour). But therein lies the problem - do I paint it or keep it as is?
It doesn't match anything else in the room, which is all white painted furniture, yellow walls, and a light maple dresser, and looks like this:
But I'm kinda liking the warm dark contrast. Its such a nice piece too, not cracked or worn, that I'm hesitant to paint it. But then again, I could do it in a nice French grey, that would work with the striped headboard...? What do you think - paint or not?
Whatever the finish, I definitely won't be keeping the chair there. The little one already has a mischievous look on her face and is eying the chair like its the next Mt. Everest to be tackled!

Haha! it was the first thing I thought: she has just replaced one climbing device with another. Then I saw the pictures at the end.
What a great solution. Hey, our little one's bedroom also has a bed in it too. It's so nice for Mommy to have such a comfy place to lounge on for nursing and cuddling, isn't it?

Hi - I just started following your blog and I love it! congratulations on such an inspirational site. I know you like antiques and all matter of interesting furniture. I work in Brampton and a new store just opened up near my office, it's called "Not too shabby" - really cool stuff and I already know I'm going to spend money there. anyway the girls in my office are really excited about this new place and I thought I'd mention it to you in case you ever want to do a fieldtrip to Brampton. Not sure if they have a website yet, but it's very neat shabby chic stuff with some great accessories.

I'm a big fan of mixing painted and wood pieces together in a room. I think it would look great either way, it's very cute. Good call on the chair, I don't even trust my 4 1/2 year old with one in her room.

love it!! what a cute piece!!! i have old school desks in both of my kiddos' rooms...they just switched over from night stands to desks...now my 6 year old has a place for homework and my 4 year old loves playing school!! i think i would keep it wood...its a great color....and when you get tired of it paint it!!!

LOL I was going to suggest you paint the chair and keep the desk in a wood tone until I saw the last picture. Either way it's a nice find but if you paint it I agree a light gray would look good.
I would keep it in wood. I think this painted wood trend is a bit of a fad and some people are going to regret painting over pieces that have good wood underneath. If the wood were in bad shape then I would say paint, but that isn't the case. I love the contrast of the wood with the pastels in the rest of the room. Maybe you could introduce some other wood tones in a few places around the room (picture frames or wooden toys) to balance it out. I love the look on your daughter's face - she definitely looks bright-eyed and bushy-tailed.
I like the contrast of the wood .... I'd live with it for a bit before you decide to paint.

She is just too cute. It would seem a shame to paint since it is in such good condition but grey would suit the room perfectly! I say paint!
It looks good as is however, painting it grey make it a little more edgy and modern. Hmm...
I say paint it white or grey, seeing as you don't have that wood tone anywhere else. It's a hard call though seeing as the wood is in pristine condition. She is such a cutie!

DO **NOT** PAINT IT!!! -- PLEASE!!
It's old and still looks like it's in great condition, Paint will only ruin it! And even if there were any "damage", I would go with a STAIN! THAT kind of Workmanship is ABOUT the Wood. Paint would be any Insult.
At any rate, the Tone of the Wood works well in that Room. And, consider... someday, you might want to use the piece Elsewhere... SAVE yourself the future hassle of paint-stripping, sanding, varnishing, MORE sanding...

Really awesome find - I would leave it as-is, it brings nice warmth to the room! And if you bring the chair back in you could put white on the seat cushion. Love the blog - just discovered it!
