Master Bedroom: Deciding on Drapery

The snow is melting, the sun is shining bright, and the smell of Spring is in the air. What is it about all that sunshine that casts everything in a flattering light, making the world seem happier, fresher, and so alive? I've been enjoying the sunlight streaming into our master bedroom lately. Most of the time we have the blackout curtains drawn to keep the cold gloomy days out of view but now with the bedroom renovation underway, what will we replace the curtains with?

I'm drawn to a few looks. I like these photos below, with drapes layered over matchstick blinds. The blinds add warmth and texture, and lend a casual summery vibe to the room.

Or we could do roman shades in each of the three windows, like below.

I like the ribbon banding detail on the roman blinds. Its a cleaner, simpler look. And blinds definitely would use less fabric - but maybe they would cost more than curtains to get made by my seamstress?? Decisions, decisions. I'll have to mull this one over for a while.

Love all of them!!

My only consideration is the view from outside if the room is street facing? I matched the romans in the 2nd bedroom to the romans on the first floor as both rooms face the street. :)

I had the same dilemma when I was picking out window treatments for our house. I ended up going with the same bamboo blinds through out the house. We wanted to be able to have light come in but also not hide our lovely old moldings.

Good luck!

Hmmm...that is a toughy because they all look fabulous. I love Roman shades, there is something very simple and elegant about them. On the other hand the blinds and drapes combo looks great! Maybe just pick what functions best for your household :)

Enjoy the sunny weekend!

Great minds must think alike as I am sourcing out bamboo blinds under drapes for my little bedroom update. Love that look. Love the texture. It's also 'cause I love Wendy Williams Watt and Rosanne Daykin's style and they have both used them in their homes. You can see Wendy's here http://poppytalk.blogspot.com/2009/05/mad-hatter-bedroom.html
I also wanted to thank you for your thoughtful comment today on my blog...it has been a very stressful road to travel with Kevin but I am so proud and am hopeful that good things are around the corner! All the best and I can't wait to see what you decide...

Is there floor/wall room for drapes? If so then I would go with the bamboo blinds and drapes option - I love the casual/formal contrast and how it fills out a wall more than roman blinds do.

I much prefer the roman shades to the matchsticks but they would cost a lot more to make. (You can buy matchstick blinds at HD for nothing). Both of them look nice.

Just keep in mind that matchsticks let in a lot of light so they aren't ideal if you want a dark room. Although with a baby you probably aren't sleeping past dawn anyway :)

Good tip Lindsay! The first floor windows have shutters in them though so they won't match unfortunately.

Tara - thanks for the link. What a great room! I love Wendy Williams Watt & her Liberty store (did you see her cottage in House & Home a few years ago? One of my faves!).

Grace - I like how it fills out a room too! And we do have the space for it...

Mrs. Limestone - You are so right. No need for alarm clocks around here either :)

All the pictures are great. We just moved into a new house and the master bedroom is huge. I really need to get busy and get some inspiration. Can't wait to see what you do.
